Instagram Comment Auto DM: Set Up Comment-to-DM in 4 Steps

Key takeaways

To auto-DM Instagram commenters, link your Instagram professional account to a Facebook Page, then create an activity in Social Automation: pick the posts, add keywords such as “+1” or “link”, and write a public reply and a DM. Each matching comment gets a reply underneath plus a DM sent through Meta’s Private Reply, which must go out within 7 days of the comment and only once per comment. Links in Instagram captions aren’t clickable, so a button in the DM gives people a one-tap link.

What is Instagram comment-to-DM automation?

With comment-to-DM, anyone who comments on your post automatically gets a short public reply under the comment and a DM with what you prepared, such as a discount code, product link or download.

The DM uses Meta’s official Private Reply feature, which messages the person behind a specific comment, with two fixed rules: within 7 days of the comment, and one private reply per comment.

Why not put the link in the caption? Instagram caption links aren’t clickable, while a DM link button opens with one tap, which is the core reason to send links by DM.

The examples use Social Automation by Crescendo Lab: it runs on Meta’s official API (Instagram and Facebook permissions approved through Meta App Review) and is not a scraper or browser extension. Each automation rule is called an activity.

What do you need before you start?

The connection runs through Meta’s official API, so check these first:

  • An Instagram professional account (business or creator). A personal account has to switch to professional first.
  • Instagram linked to a Facebook Page. Social Automation finds your Instagram account through the Page.
  • Permission to manage that Page, which the authorization requires.
  • A Facebook login. On the permission screen, tick every Page and Instagram account you want to automate.
Account missing from the dashboard after connecting? Check that the Instagram account is linked to the Page, and that both were ticked on the permission screen.

How to set up Instagram comment-to-DM in 4 steps

Using “comment +1 to get a discount link” as the example, the flow in Social Automation is:

  1. Connect Instagram. Log in with Facebook and authorize your Instagram account and Page in one go.
  2. Create an activity and choose posts. Set the trigger type to “IG post comment”, then pick the posts it covers (options below).
  3. Set keywords and a match type, for example “+1, link” with “Contains keyword”.
  4. Write the public reply and the DM, then publish. Add a few reply variants (rotated at random) and build the DM from text, buttons, an image or cards.

Four ways to choose posts

  • All posts: every post on the account, which suits long-running activities.
  • Select a post from the list: pick the specific posts you want.
  • Paste a post link or ID: comma-separate several; posts that can’t be found are flagged when you save.
  • Apply to my next post / Reel: set it up before publishing, and your next post or Reel starts working as soon as it gets a comment.
Launching a product? Choose “Apply to my next post / Reel” before you post. Replies start as comments come in, so there’s no rush back to the dashboard after publishing.

What can the DM include?

  • Text with link buttons: up to 3 buttons, each with a title and a URL.
  • Image: upload one or paste a direct image URL; jpg or png, up to 8MB.
  • Card carousel: up to 10 cards, with titles and subtitles of up to 80 characters each and up to 3 buttons per card.
Only one DM is sent per trigger. With cards, the whole message goes out as a carousel; with an image, only the image is sent. For an explanation plus a link, use text with link buttons.

Last, set the activity period to “Always active” or “Scheduled” (with a start and end time) and publish. Matching comments then get a reply and a DM around the clock.

To test, have a friend comment your keyword, then open Trigger Logs, which records every trigger, whether it succeeded or failed, and why.

How should you set keywords so you don’t miss comments?

Separate keywords with commas, for example “+1, I want, discount”; a comment matching any of them triggers the activity. Leave keywords empty and every comment triggers, including casual ones like “so cute”.

“Contains keyword” vs. “Exact match”

  • Contains keyword: the keyword can appear anywhere, so with “+1”, the comments “+1”, “+1 in blue please” and “me too +1” all trigger.
  • Exact match: triggers only when the whole comment is the keyword. With “+1”, only a comment that says just “+1” triggers.

To avoid missed comments, “Contains keyword” is usually safer; for short keywords common in everyday sentences, “Exact match” prevents accidental triggers.

Also add the variations people type: words with the same intent (“link”, “info”, “details”) and words tied to the post (“price”, “size”, “discount”).

Spell out the call to action in your caption (“Comment +1 and I’ll DM you the link”) so people know exactly what to type.

Does it work with Reels, Stories and Instagram Live?

Yes, but each has its own rules, so pick the right trigger type:

  • Reels are included in “IG post comment” and work like regular posts, with a public reply and a DM.
  • Stories (“IG story”): people who reply to your story get an automatic DM, with no public reply. A targeted story stops triggering once it expires after 24 hours, so choose “All stories” for an always-on setup.
  • Instagram Live (“IG Live comments”): public replies and DMs both work, but auto-DMs can only be sent while you’re live (a Meta restriction). Once active, the activity covers every future live.

Facebook Pages work similarly, with differences such as Facebook Live triggering only during the broadcast, not on the replay; see the Facebook Live comment auto-reply guide. Threads has no DM API from Meta, so it gets public replies only (beta, rolling out); see the Threads auto-reply guide.

Can you require a follow before sending the link?

Yes. Turn on “Require a follow before sending” (Instagram only) and the flow becomes:

  1. The commenter gets an opening message with a button.
  2. When they tap it, the system checks whether they follow you.
  3. Followers receive your DM content right away.
  4. Non-followers get a prompt to follow. Once they follow, they tap the button again to get the content.

Non-followers get at most 2 follow reminders, so nobody is flooded. It suits giving out a free resource or trial while building your following.

DM not sent? Common problems and fixes

Start with Trigger Logs to see why a trigger failed, then check the cases below.

Public replies temporarily limited by Meta

Posting the same reply over and over can lead Meta to temporarily limit your commenting; DMs are not affected. The fix is to rotate 3–5 different public replies and keep links in the DM. These limits usually lift within a few hours to a few days.

DMs blocked by another chat tool

If another chat tool on your Page is the primary receiver, auto-DMs can’t be delivered. In the Page’s Meta Business Suite, go to Settings → Messaging and make Crescendo Lab the primary receiver, or remove the other tool.

Comments older than 7 days

A Private Reply can only be sent within 7 days of the comment. The activity also has to stay active, not paused, to reply to new comments in real time.

“The link doesn’t open”

URLs typed into an Instagram caption aren’t clickable; that is a long-standing Instagram limitation. Put the link in a DM button instead.

No tool can promise that your account will never be limited by Meta, and automated replies and DMs must still follow Meta’s policies. Keep several reply variants and avoid repeating one sentence at scale.

Start faster with a template

Quick-start templates give you a ready-made activity to adjust. The ones that fit Instagram comment-to-DM:

  • Comment +1 to get a promo code: the classic setup for promotions.
  • Comment to get a product trial: for new product launches.
  • Comment “want” to get the free resource: for creators and educators sharing ebooks or guides.
  • Comment “book” for a reservation link: for restaurants and shops.

For Instagram Live, there is also “Comment +1 during a live to get the offer”.

Social Automation has no free plan, but every plan comes with a 7-day free trial and no charge during the trial; see plans and pricing. Comparing tools? Read the ManyChat alternative guide.

FAQ

Is Instagram comment-to-DM automation free?

Social Automation has no free plan, but every plan includes a 7-day free trial with no charge during the trial. As of September 2026, Lite starts at US$29 per month (international pricing) and every paid plan has unlimited triggers. Cancel any time in Workspace; service runs to the end of the paid period, which isn’t refunded.

Can I use the same setup on a Facebook Page?

Yes, as a separate activity with the trigger type “FB post comment”. Page comments get a public reply and a Messenger DM under the same Private Reply rules (within 7 days, once per comment); Facebook Live comments trigger only during the broadcast.

How many DMs can one comment receive?

One. Meta’s Private Reply allows a single DM per comment, sent within 7 days, so put the link, code and instructions in that one message.

Do I need a developer to set it up?

No coding is needed: log in with Facebook, choose posts, enter keywords and build the DM in the block editor, or start from a template. The interface comes in Traditional Chinese, English and Thai.

Can auto-DMs get my Instagram account restricted?

No tool can promise that an account will never be restricted by Meta, and content must follow Meta’s policies. Social Automation uses Meta’s official API with Instagram and Facebook permissions approved through Meta App Review; it is not a scraper or browser extension. Rotating 3–5 public replies and keeping links in the DM avoids repeating the same text.
