Facebook Live Comment Auto Reply: 3 Things to Set Up First
Key takeaways
Before you go live, set up three things: an “FB Live comments” activity in Social Automation with keywords like +1 and rotating public replies; a Messenger DM with link buttons or a card carousel carrying your link or promo code; and the timing rules. The activity triggers only during the live, replays need a separate “FB post comment” activity, and each DM is a Meta Private Reply sent within 7 days of the comment, once per comment. Once enabled, it covers every future live.
What does Facebook Live comment auto-reply do?
During a busy live sale, “+1”, “want”, and “how much?” arrive at once, faster than a host can answer while presenting.
With an “FB Live comments” activity in Social Automation, each comment matching your keywords during the live gets two automatic responses, often called comment-to-DM:
- A public reply, such as “Just sent you a DM!”, so everyone sees the comment was picked up. Write several versions and the system rotates them.
- A Messenger DM with a product link, promo code, or ordering steps, sent as text with link buttons or as a card carousel.
The host keeps presenting, and every trigger, successful or failed, is logged in Trigger Logs with the reason for any failure. Social Automation runs on Meta's official APIs (its Instagram and Facebook permissions passed Meta App Review); it isn't a scraper or a browser extension.
Step 1: Create an “FB Live comments” activity with keywords and public replies
You need permission to manage the Facebook Page; select it on the permission screen when you sign in with Facebook. Then:
- Connect your Page with one-click authorization.
- Create an activity with “FB Live comments” as the trigger type, or start from the “FB Live comment auto-reply” quick-start template and edit it.
- Add keywords, separated by commas, such as +1, want, sold. Leave it empty and every comment triggers, greetings included, meaning more public replies.
- Pick a match type. “Contains keyword” fires when the keyword appears anywhere in the comment; “Exact match” needs the whole comment to equal it. Live comments often add a color, size, or item number (“+1 red M”), so “Contains keyword” misses fewer.
- Write 3–5 public replies that say the same thing differently, such as “Got your +1! Check Messenger 📩” or “Details are in your DMs.” The system picks one at random.
- Set the activity period. “Always active” covers every future live; “Scheduled” sets a start and end time for a limited-time offer.
Step 2: Prepare the DM: link buttons or a card carousel?
The DM is where viewers go to buy. You build it in the block editor from three block types:
- Text + link buttons: up to 3 link buttons, each with its own title and URL. Good for one hero product, or a promo code plus an order link.
- Image: upload a file or paste a direct image URL (jpg or png, up to 8MB).
- Card carousel: up to 10 cards, each with a title and subtitle (up to 80 characters each) and up to 3 buttons. Use one card per product when a live covers several.
Only one DM is sent per trigger
Easy to overlook: each trigger sends a single DM, and blocks follow this priority:
- Any cards: the whole DM goes out as a card carousel, and text, button, and image blocks aren't sent.
- No cards but an image: only the image is sent.
- Text and buttons only: sent as text with buttons.
A sample live-sale DM
- Text: Thanks for joining tonight's live! Your item is below. Use code LIVE0928 at checkout for tonight's offer.
- Button 1: Order now (product page or cart)
- Button 2: Tonight's product list
Step 3: Understand the timing: does it reply to replay comments?
Facebook Live has four timing rules.
Rule 1: It triggers only while the broadcast is live
An “FB Live comments” activity handles comments made during the live, replying publicly and by DM right away. Once the live becomes a replay, new replay comments don't trigger it.
Rule 2: Cover the replay with a separate “FB post comment” activity
Some viewers comment +1 on the replay later. To catch them, create an “FB post comment” activity for that live video or for all posts; reusing the live activity's keywords and DM keeps the information consistent.
Rule 3: The DM is a Private Reply: within 7 days, once per comment
The Messenger DM is a Meta Private Reply, a private message tied to one comment: it must be sent within 7 days of the comment, and each comment can receive only one (the replay's “FB post comment” activity follows the same rule). The live activity replies as comments arrive, so just keep it active; if a DM ever misses the window, Trigger Logs shows why.
Rule 4: Set it once for every future live
Once enabled, it applies to every future live; just confirm the DM's link and promo code before each one.
Pre-live checklist
Run through this before you go live:
- In Activity Management, confirm the “FB Live comments” activity is published and active (not a draft, not paused) on the right Page, and that any schedule covers this live.
- In Meta Business Suite → Settings → Messaging, make sure Crescendo Lab is the Page's primary receiver.
- Early in the live (or in a short test live), comment a keyword from another Facebook account of yours, confirm the public reply and the DM arrive, and check Trigger Logs.
- Have 3–5 different public replies ready, with no links in them.
- Tap every DM button to confirm the links and promo code are for this live.
- For the replay, confirm the “FB post comment” activity is set up and active.
How is Instagram Live different?
On Instagram, choose “IG Live comments”. Keywords, public replies, and DMs work the same way, with DMs going to the viewer's Instagram inbox. The differences:
- Auto-DMs can only be sent while the live is in progress. This is a Meta restriction, so enable the activity before you start.
- Account requirements: a professional Instagram account (business or creator) linked to a Facebook Page, which is how the system finds it.
- Set it once: after that, it applies to every future Instagram live.
- Template: “Comment +1 during a live to get the offer” is ready to apply and edit.
Live on both platforms? Create one activity for each. Links in Instagram captions can't be tapped, so on Instagram the DM is where links belong; for posts and Reels, see how to auto-DM Instagram commenters.
Troubleshooting: public replies limited or DMs not sent?
Know these three situations before a busy live. Failed triggers appear in Trigger Logs with a reason.
Public replies temporarily limited by Meta
Posting the same reply text over and over may lead Meta to temporarily limit your Page's commenting; DMs aren't affected. Rotate 3–5 different texts and keep links in the DM. These limits usually lift on their own within a few hours to a few days.
DMs blocked by another chat tool
If another chat tool on your Page is the primary receiver, auto-DMs can't be sent. Make Crescendo Lab the primary receiver in Meta Business Suite → Settings → Messaging, or remove the other tool, before you go live.
Comments that come too late
- After the live ends: the live activity stops triggering, so use an “FB post comment” activity to cover the replay.
- Past the reply window: after 7 days, a comment can no longer get a Private Reply. Keep activities active so replies go out as comments arrive.

FAQ
Will it reply to comments after the live ends?
No. The “FB Live comments” activity triggers only during the live. For replay viewers, add a separate “FB post comment” activity on that live video or on all posts.
If someone comments twice, do they get two DMs?
DMs are counted per comment, not per person. Meta allows one Private Reply per comment, so no comment is messaged twice; two matching comments from one person are two triggers, and each comment can receive its own private reply.
Do I need to set it up again for every live?
No. Once enabled, the activity applies to every future live. Just check the DM's link and promo code each time.
Can I use it for Instagram Live too?
Yes, with a separate “IG Live comments” activity. Instagram auto-DMs can only be sent during the live, and you need a professional account linked to a Facebook Page.
Do I have to pay? Is there a free plan?
There's no free plan, but every plan starts with a 7-day free trial, with no charge during the trial. Lite is US$29 a month for 2 accounts and 5 activities; Standard and Pro have unlimited activities.
