ManyChat Alternative for Instagram Comment-to-DM: How to Choose

Key takeaways

If you need many channels (such as WhatsApp or TikTok) or complex conversation flows, ManyChat is the closer fit; if you want Instagram and Facebook comments turned into DMs (plus automatic replies on Threads), with a Traditional Chinese, English or Thai interface, NT$ or THB pricing and Taiwan tax invoices, Social Automation fits better. If both tools share a Facebook Page, check Meta's primary receiver setting first: when the other tool is the primary receiver, Social Automation's automatic DMs can't be sent. ManyChat details reflect public information as of September 2026.

The short answer: when to choose ManyChat or Social Automation

ManyChat covers more channels; Social Automation, from Crescendo Lab, focuses on comment auto-replies and comment-to-DM for Instagram, Facebook and Threads. ManyChat details reflect public information as of September 2026.

ManyChat is likely the closer fit if you…

  • need channels beyond Instagram and Messenger, such as WhatsApp or TikTok
  • want to build complex conversation flows

Social Automation is likely the better fit if you…

  • mainly want Instagram and Facebook comments turned into DMs that point to your offers, plus automatic replies on Threads
  • want your team to work in Traditional Chinese, English or Thai
  • want NT$ pricing in Taiwan or baht in Thailand, or need a Taiwan invoice with your company tax ID

Six things to check when choosing a comment auto-reply tool

For each point, we explain how Social Automation handles it. For ManyChat, we stick to what public information confirms and don't comment on whether it has any particular feature.

1. Does it use Meta's official API and pass App Review?

Check whether the tool connects through Meta's official API rather than scraping or a browser extension. Social Automation uses Meta's official API, and its Instagram and Facebook permissions have passed Meta App Review.

No tool can promise that an account will never be restricted by Meta. Whichever tool you use, your replies and DMs still need to follow Meta's policies.

2. Which platforms and triggers does it support?

Check each place your audience engages. Social Automation covers Instagram (posts, Reels, Stories, Live), Facebook Pages (posts, Live) and Threads (public replies, beta). ManyChat covers more channels, for example Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and TikTok.

3. What can the DM contain?

Links in Instagram post captions aren't clickable (an existing Instagram limitation), which is the main reason links go into the DM. Social Automation DMs can carry text with link buttons, an image, or a card carousel.

4. What language is the interface in?

Your team will work in the dashboard, so try it first. Social Automation's interface is available in Traditional Chinese, English and Thai.

5. Which currency, and can you get the invoice you need?

Social Automation is priced in US$ internationally and NT$ in Taiwan (baht on the Thai page), and Taiwan companies can get an invoice with their tax ID (統一編號). Its plans are based on accounts and activities. ManyChat prices in US dollars and, since March 2026, uses plans tiered by number of contacts.

6. How is it set up?

Decide whether you need “comment → DM” rules or complex conversation flows. ManyChat can run complex conversation flows. Social Automation is organized around activities (trigger, posts, keywords, DM).

What is ManyChat?

Based on public information as of September 2026, ManyChat is a US conversational marketing and chatbot platform. It supports more channels, for example Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and TikTok, and can run complex conversation flows.

ManyChat prices in US dollars, and since March 2026 its plans have been tiered by number of contacts. Check ManyChat's official materials for current plans and pricing. Overall, it suits teams that need many channels and complex conversation flows.

What is Social Automation and what can it do?

Social Automation is Crescendo Lab's comment auto-reply and comment-to-DM tool for Instagram, Facebook and Threads. Each automation rule is called an activity.

Supported triggers

  • Instagram post comments (including Reels): public reply plus DM. The DM is a Meta Private Reply: it must go out within 7 days of the comment, one per comment.
  • Instagram Stories: DM. An activity tied to one story stops when that story expires after 24 hours; choose all stories for ongoing use.
  • Instagram Live comments: public reply plus DM. DMs go out during the stream, not after it (a Meta restriction), and the activity covers every later stream.
  • Facebook Page post comments: public reply plus Messenger DM (Private Reply), within 7 days of the comment, one per comment.
  • Facebook Live comments: public reply plus DM during the stream. Replay comments don't trigger it, so cover replays with a Facebook post comment activity.
  • Threads replies: public replies (beta, rolling out). Meta doesn't provide a Threads DM API, so there are no DMs on Threads.

Activity settings

Target all posts, selected posts, pasted post URLs or IDs, or your next post or Reel. Keywords are comma-separated (leave them empty to trigger on every comment) and matched by “contains” or “exact match”. Several public replies rotate at random.

What a DM can contain

Text with up to 3 link buttons; an image (JPG or PNG, up to 8 MB); or a carousel of up to 10 cards, with titles and subtitles up to 80 characters and up to 3 buttons per card. One DM is sent at a time: a carousel goes out as the whole DM, and an image goes out without the other blocks.

On Instagram you can require a follow first: tapping the button in an opening message checks whether the commenter follows you. Followers get the content; everyone else gets a reminder to follow and receives it once they follow and tap again. People who don't follow never get the content, and reminders stop after 2 to avoid spamming. Facebook Page comment activities can add a subscribe button after the DM; broadcasts to those subscribers (Marketing Messages on Messenger) are awaiting Meta review and not yet available.

Plans and pricing (September 2026)

  • Lite: US$29/month (NT$1,000 in Taiwan), 2 accounts, 5 activities
  • Standard: US$79/month (NT$2,500 in Taiwan), 5 accounts, unlimited activities
  • Pro: US$129/month (NT$4,000 in Taiwan), unlimited accounts and activities

Triggers are unlimited on every plan, and the Thai page shows the same figures in baht. There's no free plan, but every plan has a 7-day free trial. Payment is by international credit card (such as Visa or Mastercard) through Stripe, the plan activates once payment succeeds, and Taiwan companies can add a tax ID for the invoice.

Before running both tools or switching: check the primary receiver

If your Facebook Page is also connected to another chat tool and that tool is set as the primary receiver, Social Automation's automatic DMs can't be sent. To change it:

  1. Open Meta Business Suite and go to Settings.
  2. Open the messaging settings.
  3. Set Crescendo Lab as the primary receiver, or remove the other tool if you won't run both.

Decide up front which tool handles automatic DMs, and check the other tool's documentation for how this setting affects it. Meta also allows one private reply per comment, so if you run both, split them by post or keyword.

If automatic DMs keep failing, check the primary receiver setting first, then the trigger log, which records every trigger, whether it succeeded or failed, and why.

Checklist for moving over from ManyChat

  • Recreate your activities in the Social Automation dashboard, starting from a quick-start template if one fits.
  • Write 3–5 different public replies (they rotate) and keep links in the DM. If the same reply is posted in large volumes, Meta may temporarily restrict the Page's commenting (DMs aren't affected), usually for a few hours to a few days.
  • Keep activities active so they reply in real time; Private Replies must go out within 7 days of the comment.

How do you start a Social Automation trial?

You'll need an Instagram professional account (business or creator) connected to a Facebook Page, plus permission to manage that Page. You sign in with Facebook and select the Pages and Instagram accounts to manage.

  1. Connect your accounts: authorize Instagram, a Facebook Page or Threads in one step.
  2. Set up an activity: choose the trigger and posts, add keywords and build the DM.
  3. Go live: replies and DMs go out automatically, around the clock.
  4. Check the trigger log: every trigger is recorded, with success or failure and the reason.

Every plan includes a 7-day free trial. See plans and pricing, or follow the step-by-step Instagram comment-to-DM guide.
