Instagram live ads + comment auto-DM: catch the viewers ads bring in

Key takeaways

Instagram live video ads show a broadcast that is happening right now in Stories, Reels and Feed, so people who don't follow you can see it. When those viewers comment, a Social Automation "IG Live comments" activity replies publicly and DMs them the link in real time, and "Require a follow before sending" turns them into followers along the way. People who tap an ad's message button get an automatic reply from an activity set to answer only DMs from an ad. Social Automation does not buy ads for you; it catches the people the ads bring in.

What are Instagram live ads?

A live video ad promotes a broadcast while it is happening, so people who don't follow you see it as they scroll. Facebook has offered this for a while; for Instagram, Meta announced in September 2026 that live video ads would be available from September 29.

According to Meta Korea's launch announcement of September 30, 2026:

  • Who can use them: professional or creator accounts with 1,000 or more followers. Instagram also requires a public account with at least 1,000 followers to go live at all.
  • Where to create them: Ads Manager, Meta Business Suite, or the Instagram app.
  • Where they appear: in Stories, Reels and Feed while you are live. In Stories the live plays for up to 15 seconds; in Reels and Feed it plays until the viewer scrolls past.
  • Links: during the live you can add a link to a website, an app or WhatsApp.
  • Cost: no separate sales or transaction fee; normal ad pricing applies.
  • Creators: with the creator's consent, brands can promote a creator's content as a Partnership Ad.
Eligibility, markets and placements follow Meta's own announcements and can change; check Ads Manager before you launch.

Who answers when the ad audience starts commenting?

A live ad exists to reach people who don't know you yet. Their questions are blunt: how much, how do I buy, is there a link. Once an ad multiplies the comments, a host presenting products can't answer them all.

Timing makes it harder: automatic DMs from an Instagram live can only be sent while the broadcast is live. That's a Meta limit, so replying after the stream ends is too late.

Before you spend the ad budget, set up the catch: commenters get a public reply and the link by DM right away, and people who tap the ad's message button get an answer too.

Links in Instagram captions can't be tapped, so the buy link has to travel in the DM or on a button.

Before you go live: set up an IG Live comments activity, then decide on follow-to-unlock

  1. Connect Instagram: it must be a professional account (business or creator) linked to a Facebook Page; you authorize it by logging in with Facebook.
  2. Create an activity with the "IG Live comments" trigger: or start from the "Comment +1 during a live to get the offer" quick-start template and edit the copy.
  3. Add keywords: for example "+1, price, link, want". Ad audiences word things in many ways, so the "Contains keyword" match type misses less.
  4. Write public replies: 3–5 differently worded replies that the system rotates, such as "Sent you a DM 📩".
  5. Prepare the DM: text with up to 3 link buttons, or a card carousel to show several products.
  6. Decide on "Require a follow before sending" (Instagram only): see below.
  7. Activate it: once active, the activity applies to every future live; no need to set it up again for each broadcast.

Why live ads and follow-to-unlock go together

Most people an ad brings in don't follow you yet. With "Require a follow before sending" on, the commenter first gets a message with a button. When they tap it, the system checks whether they follow you: if they do, they get the content; if not, they get a reminder to follow, and tapping again after following unlocks it. The viewers the ad reached stay in your follower list after the stream ends.

People who don't follow won't get the content, and the follow reminder is sent at most twice. If the point of the stream is for everyone to get the offer, leave this off.

Facebook live ads work the same way

For Facebook Live, use the "FB Live comments" activity; the DM goes through Messenger. It triggers only while the broadcast is live; comments on the replay don't trigger it, so add an "FB post comment" activity to cover the replay. Full setup: Facebook Live comment auto-reply.

The ad's message button: answer only DMs that come from an ad

Click-to-Instagram-Direct and click-to-Messenger ads open a new conversation when someone taps the button (a live ad that uses a message button works the same way). People who tap in often don't know what to ask yet, so the first reply matters most.

In Social Automation, create an "Instagram DM" activity (on Facebook, "FB Messenger message") and set "Which DMs to answer" to "Only DMs from an ad":

  • Only the message that opens the conversation gets the reply: each person who comes from the ad is answered once, and the bot doesn't keep cutting into the conversation.
  • Keywords are optional: leave them empty to answer everyone who comes from the ad; activities with keywords take messages that contain them first.
  • The DM is required: text with link buttons can hand over the product link, the next stream time or answers to common questions in one go.
  • The trigger log marks it "From an ad": with the ad ID from Meta, so you can tell which conversations the ad brought in.

Ordinary DMs can be answered too

The same Instagram DM activity can instead answer "DMs that match a keyword". Instagram DM activities need keywords, so the bot doesn't reply to every line of a conversation.

The auto-reply only fires if it receives the DM. If the Page is also connected to another chat tool (a support inbox, for example), open Meta Business Suite → Settings → Integrations → Conversation routing: set the default app to Crescendo Lab or leave it unset, and in Crescendo Lab's Manage dialog turn on Take control of conversations and Access all conversations. When another tool is the default app, DMs go to that tool and the auto-reply here never fires. Set Messenger and Instagram separately.

Checklist before the stream

  1. Instagram is a professional account linked to a Facebook Page and authorized in Social Automation.
  2. The IG Live comments activity is Active, with keywords, public replies and the DM filled in.
  3. You've decided whether this stream should require a follow first.
  4. If the ad uses a message button, an "Only DMs from an ad" activity is set up.
  5. After the stream, the Trigger Logs show every trigger and why any failed.

Social Automation doesn't create or run ads. You set up the ad in Meta's Ads Manager, Meta Business Suite or the Instagram app; we answer the comments and DMs it brings in.

Social Automation uses Meta's official APIs and its Instagram and Facebook permissions passed Meta App Review, but no provider can guarantee that Meta will never restrict an account; your live and ad content must still follow Meta's policies.

FAQ

Who can run Instagram live ads?

According to Meta Korea's launch announcement, professional or creator accounts with 1,000 or more followers, created in Ads Manager, Meta Business Suite or the Instagram app. Meta's own announcements are the final word on eligibility and markets.

Does Social Automation run the live ads for me?

No. You set up and pay for ads in Meta's tools; Social Automation automatically answers the live comments and the DMs the ads bring in.

When do commenters from the ad get their DM?

Matching comments get a public reply and a DM in real time during the live. Automatic DMs from an Instagram live can only be sent while it's live; that's a Meta limit.

How many automatic replies does someone who comes from an ad get?

One. An activity set to "Only DMs from an ad" answers only the message that opens the conversation; after that, the conversation is yours or your team's.
